The
College of Veterinary Medicine at National Chung Hsing University, being
the first college of its kind in this country, was established on August
1, 1999, with the approval of the Ministry of Education. Presently, it
comprises of three
academic units, and two affiliated units, namely, the Veterinary Medical
Teaching Hospital and Animal Disease Diagnostic Center. The three
academic units are the Department of Veterinary Medicine that is
responsible for the undergraduate program as well as programs in
Master’s and Ph. D. degrees,
Graduate
Institute of Microbiology and Public Health,
and Graduate Institute of Veterinary Pathobiology. The undergraduate
program is clinically oriented to meet our society's demand for more
veterinary clinicians. To fulfill the needs of the contemporary
Taiwanese society for certain specialized veterinary services, we had
invested extra efforts in training our students to handle cases
pertaining to companion animals, pets, laboratory animals and animals
involved in recreational activities. Faculty members of the
aforementioned graduate institutes also help the Department of
Veterinary Medicine in the teaching of undergraduate students.
The
faculty members of our college are grouped together in their teaching
and research assignments, depending on their field of specialization.
This arrangement had proved to be very efficient in the use of our human
and material resources for achieving a high standard of clinical
teaching in conjunction with the use of the facilities at the Veterinary
Medical Teaching Hospital.
The
College of Veterinary Medicine also collaborated with the Bureau of
Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine to set up the Animal
Disease Diagnostic Center in our campus. By doing so, we are
contributing the expertise of our faculty members in the diagnosis and
prophylaxis of animal diseases for the common good. We hope to achieve a
balanced development in veterinary education, research and extension
services for our college.
As for the
future development of the College of Veterinary Medicine, we envision it
being made up of one Veterinary department and several graduate
institutes. Beside training veterinarians, we also strive to raise the
level of veterinary research and therapy in our country to one that is
compatible and recognized internationally.
